Gideon Delaune and his Family Circle

چکیده

The courses of many epidemic diseases reflect the social and economic changes in any nation. They are so often closely influenced by such problems as migrant labour, improving communications, movement of population, and rapid urbanisation. Ghana is no exception; the pattern of disease in that country is closely bound up with the history of its development-as this book well shows. Dr. Scott's own unrivalled experience of rural health problems in Ghana lends particular weight to his interpretation of some of the findings and his deductions regarding future trends. It is to be hoped that the excellent pattern of this study will be copied by workers in other developing countries before so many of the early and manuscript records, of such historical and epidemiological value, cease to be available. A “Circle Limit III” Backbone Arc Formula

M.C. Escher considered Circle Limit III to be the most successful of his four “Circle Limit” patterns. Two artistic or mathematical questions have been raised: (1) what angle do the white backbone lines make with the bounding circle, and (2) are other such patterns of fish possible? H.S.M. Coxeter provided exact expressions to the answer the first question, and a 3-parameter family of possible ...

A “Circle Limit III” Calculation

M.C. Escher’s Circle Limit III is usually thought to be the most appealing of his four “Circle Limit” patterns. Two artistic/mathematical questions seem to arise: (1) what angle do the white backbone lines make with the bounding circle, and (2) are other such patterns of fish possible? H.S.M. Coxeter answered the first question and I described a 3-parameter family of possible fish patterns in m...

Irrational rotations motivate measurable sets

In 1914 Constantin Carathéodory gave his definition of a measurable set, a definition that is crucial in the general theory of integration. This is because a “primitive” notion of area or measure, on a smaller family of sets, can be extended to the larger family of measurable sets, and it is this larger family that has the necessary properties for a natural and complete theory of integration. T...
